Exercise: Getting the Gist

This exercise asks us to:

  1. Choose an editorial from a magazine or newspaper.
  2. Read it once as you normally would.
  3. Read it again and underline the key words which you think are important to the meaning of the piece overall.
  4. Read the text again - has your understanding changed?
  5. Distill and condense the text to help you focus on what message needs to be communicated.
  6. Create an image that conveys this.
  7. Try a number of different ideas / variations.

Although not a physical article, it is a blog post on the online Delicious Magazine.

My Keywords were:
  • Plate
  • Food diary
  • Banana
  • Soup
  • Apple
  • Blueberries
  • Porridge
  • Salad
  • Spinach
  • Cucumber
  • Challenge
  • Rabbit (Feel like a..)
  • Keep track
My summary of this text: 'While it may seem daunting at first, with careful planning you can eat way more fruit and veg than you think - and hit your 5 a day regularly. Take up the challenge and feel better for it.'

Below are some photos which accompanied the article:

I started by sketching some ideas in the Paper by 53 app using the roller tool, which allowed me to flesh out my work in one pull of the stylus rather than starting with a line sketch, inking over the top and adding colour at the end.

This allowed for quick idea generation.

I then asked my husband for inspiration and his idea was to draw a person somehow trying to run after their 5 a day,  illustrating the challenge (one of my keywords) to "get" them and playing on the literal meaning of the words.

Initial Idea:

I then took the image into Procreate so I could move the elements around to get a more balanced illustration, as well as add the background grass and text.

I feel the illustration works well with the type of article (not a serious business or political article for example) and it's fresh, brightly coloured and loose. It could be understood with or without the accompanying text.

Final Illustration to accompany the article:

Final Thoughts:

I have a hard time following a brief when asked to draw something specific, but I realise now that it's because I hardly ever practice this skill and normally draw whatever I like. I'm looking forward to flexing this artistic editorial muscle more!

I felt it was useful to jot down the keywords and flesh out the image based on these ideas.

I'm also grateful to my husband for his out of the box thinking on this one! He can't draw a straight line to save his life, but his ability to generate new ideas is something I very much admire in him.
